Our Babies

"Welcome to Holland"
By Emily Perl Kingsley, 1987. All rights reserved.
I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......
When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.
After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."
"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."
But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.
The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.
So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.
It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.
But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."
And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away...because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss. But...if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.Tuesday, August 31, 2010
Mmmmmmm
In other news, Luke had a playdate with his friends Anna, Joseph, Grace, Rece, Evan, and Gwen. All of the daddies have been extremely busy with work, so all of the mommies decided to get together for dinner. Everyone had a great time playing together, but Luke sure was tired when he got home.
I am participating in an audit at work, so I had to miss our favorite appointment of the week with Ms. Anita :( However, the Ms. Tiffany (Luke's teacher) gave me the full report and said he did a great job sitting up in his Bumbo seat and rolling over.
Luke is very excited because he has a new friend also named Luke who was just born the other day! AND....we're eagerly waiting on the his next friend to be born! Some of our best friends, the Larsons (I lived with Christy, and Patrick lived with her husband, Lars, before we were all married) are just about to have their first baby! Luke can't wait to meet his new friends! Keep your fingers crossed he arrives soon :0

Hot Date
![]() |
| And so it begins...... |

Before Patrick and I had kids, we always joked about when dating could begin. We always said sixteen seemed to be a good age. Well, Anna is just too cute, so 16 weeks just had to do. Luke loved that she took control of the date; however, if you look at the picture of he and Anna sitting together, you can tell there were some awkward moments in the date. Never fear, Anna's big brother, Joseph stepped in (literally) to help out his little sister. There was no first kiss, but Luke did score another date :)

Just one of those weeks
It all started when Ralphie apparently didn't think he was getting enough attention. Rather than sitting nicely in our laps, he thought it was a far better idea to relieve himself on our bedspread. Now, he may be stupid, but he isn't THAT stupid (Ralphie, not Patrick). I'm not sure what brought this on, but it might have been due to the fact that we have been ignoring him a bit because he constantly wants to go outside to run up and down the fence to play with the dog who just moved in behind us. Regardless, we don't have our fluffy comforter, and blankets just don't cut it.
So, my car has been having some "technical difficulties" lately. We thought we could outsmart it and have it fixed over Labor Day weekend, but it had a different idea. When Luke and I went out to the scalding hot car after Occupational Therapy Tuesday night, poor little Marylou Mariner just couldn't come fully back to life. She huffed and puffed, but sadly, she died. I would like to point out that this was the first time EVER that I did not have a panic attack during an event such as this. Instead, I calmly called my friend Rob, who luckily works near where we were, for a ride, I contacted the towing service, and I informed Patrick of what had happened without freaking out. Luckily, it was technical difficulties with the battery, so it ended up not being a traumatic financial event either :)
Just wait...stuff happens in three's. Two down, one to go. For now, we'll focus on the happy things like Luke's occupational therapy. His little attitude is starting to come out more and more, so he is very good about letting Ms. Anita know when he doesn't feel like working on certain exercises. Despite his vocal opinions, he is doing a stellar job.

Grandpa & Grandma (and Maddie) are in town!!!
School is closed down for the week to give teachers a "summer break" and to allow time for additional in-services since there is a high special needs enrollment. Luke doesn't mind though because he's spending the week at home with Grandpa and Grandma. Today, everyone came up to Northwest Pipe to tour the mill and see what I actually do at work. Then, we went to Casico's, one of our favorite restaurants for lunch. I had to go back to reality, but Patrick and I came home to a happy baby, enchiladas, and peach pie. All in all, it was a fabulous day.

Just Another Weekend

Then, we were super hungry, and nothing sounded better than a yummy sandwich at Which Wich?, one of our favorite restaurants.
Luke was hungry too, but his bottle sounded MUCH better than a meatball sub. Check out his newest skill of holding his bottle! He struggles with the giant heavy bottles, but he has no trouble with the little five ounce bottles that we have. He was super sleepy during this bottle, so the holding didn't last long. We'll make sure to lift weights this week.

Notice that there is a new outfit in this picture. Luke decided that his bottle at lunchtime was sssoooo delicious that it needed to come out of his diaper right after eating. Go figure that we didn't have any extra outfits with us!
Later that night, Luke and Daddy had Boys' Night Out and went to see Ironman 2. Daddy was a little worried at first because Luke started crying during the previews. However, Luke was just trying to say that he wanted a snack during the movie. After a quick bottle, Luke was sound asleep. Guess he'll have to watch the movie on Netflix.
While the boys had their man time, I went out to Painting with a Twist with my friends, Suzi and Laura. Basically, the idea is that you paint while drinking wine. The goal is to drink enough so your painting looks fabulous. Luckily, this picture is tiny, so the paintings still look beautiful. None of us should quit our day jobs anytime soon :)
Whew! We are worn out! Daddy managed to escape work early tonight, so after a nice walk it was time for a bottle and bed. It's another busy week ahead, which hopefully means time will go quickly because Grandpa and Grandma Godinez get here next weekend! Luke is counting down the days!
