"Welcome to Holland"

By Emily Perl Kingsley, 1987. All rights reserved.

I am often asked to describe the experience of raising a child with a disability - to try to help people who have not shared that unique experience to understand it, to imagine how it would feel. It's like this......

When you're going to have a baby, it's like planning a fabulous vacation trip - to Italy. You buy a bunch of guide books and make your wonderful plans. The Coliseum. The Michelangelo David. The gondolas in Venice. You may learn some handy phrases in Italian. It's all very exciting.

After months of eager anticipation, the day finally arrives. You pack your bags and off you go. Several hours later, the plane lands. The stewardess comes in and says, "Welcome to Holland."

"Holland?!?" you say. "What do you mean Holland?? I signed up for Italy! I'm supposed to be in Italy. All my life I've dreamed of going to Italy."

But there's been a change in the flight plan. They've landed in Holland and there you must stay.

The important thing is that they haven't taken you to a horrible, disgusting, filthy place, full of pestilence, famine and disease. It's just a different place.

So you must go out and buy new guide books. And you must learn a whole new language. And you will meet a whole new group of people you would never have met.

It's just a different place. It's slower-paced than Italy, less flashy than Italy. But after you've been there for a while and you catch your breath, you look around.... and you begin to notice that Holland has windmills....and Holland has tulips. Holland even has Rembrandts.

But everyone you know is busy coming and going from Italy... and they're all bragging about what a wonderful time they had there. And for the rest of your life, you will say "Yes, that's where I was supposed to go. That's what I had planned."

And the pain of that will never, ever, ever, ever go away...because the loss of that dream is a very very significant loss. But...if you spend your life mourning the fact that you didn't get to Italy, you may never be free to enjoy the very special, the very lovely things ... about Holland.

School Days x2!

Today was the first official day that I had to get two kids plus myself out the door to school and work by 8:00, and it was a success!! Grandma took Claire for her actual first day last week, but today was the official   "picture for the blog" day. Claire wore a stylish yellow and green outfit, complete with cute keds and a bright green bow! We had to lay out our outfit the night before all the way down to the accessories. Do you know what it's like to dress a girl in the morning? Pair that with mommy trying to dress herself, and we've got trouble. Thankfully, Luke is easy - shorts and matching shirt; however, today was a big day for him. NO ANKLE BRACES AT SCHOOL!!!!!

We've been letting him walk around the house more and more without his braces, and he seemed to be much more stable. Last week we tried out a birthday party in regular sandals, and Luke rocked the sans socks and braces look. Today, he did awesome at school, so we'll get the final approval to ditch the things when we see Anita on Wednesday.

Now, I have to confess: I did not get a report from his teachers about his walking success - I watched him at recess from my office window!!!!! There I was diligently working on a project when I heard kiddos yelling outside my window. I peeked out to the playground across the street, and there was Luke running (in his T-Rex-like awkward run) with all of the big kids at recess. Did I mention that I LOVE that my office window faces school? Luke did fall down quite a bit on the slanted playground that is covered in grass, but that had more to do with bad genetics from his mom rather than his missing leg braces!

After I watched Luke finish playing and go inside for lunch, I started to feel bad that I didn't see Claire. So, I grabbed my office keys and headed out the door. I peeked my head quietly into her room, and she was sound asleep - or so I thought. As soon as I started talking those big, blue eyes popped right open and stared at me. Busted. It was probably for the best because then we got some snuggle time in before I had to get back to work.

Overall, both kiddos had a good report. Luke needs to work on our routine for dropping sister off, and Claire needs to get used to her teachers a bit more. Soon she'll love school just as much as her big brother. And one of these days I'll remember to take a picture of both kids!

What a busy week!

For the past two weeks Patrick thought he might be going to Korea for work. It was on again, off again, and it was difficult to get dates pinned down. Finally, this Thursday he got his airplane tickets...to leave yesterday morning. Not a big deal...except that I am leaving in the morning for a conference in Washington D.C. Thankfully, Grandma just arrived to save the day! Here's what all went on during our week of chaos:

Daddy got some extra cuddle time with Claire Bear before he left. I promise she normally loves it despite her pained look in this picture.

Luke has been working really hard to help Claire with her tummy time. He turns on his teddy bear, Scout, so Claire can listen to the music and watch the lights on his belly; however, the television distracted Luke from his brotherly responsibility.

You can't see me.....

If I keep laying really still, maybe Luke will leave us alone. Daddy is cuddling me!!!

How you doin'?

Yep, I'm as awesome as I look!

Claire got her first bites of cereal!!! She wasn't quite sure what to think the first time we tried it.

Oooohhhh!!! That second bit was yummier than the first!

Now that Luke is in his big boy bed, Ralphie likes to help with wake-up time. Sophie decided to help out today as well, but she was too scared to get her picture taken.

Whew! That was a great nap! But now I'm hungry....

I think I'll make some muffins!

Yes, I am just like my daddy, and I love to cook! These were banana-chocolate chip muffins, and they were delicious!

Luke wasn't the only hungry one. Good thing he finally gave up sitting in his high chair for most meals and switched to his booster seat at the grown-up table.

Mmmmm....feed me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Delicious!

While Claire was busy eating, Luke decided to borrow her bumbo chair to watch Mickey Mouse Playhouse (his new favorite show).

I love this show!!!

When Mickey Mouse was over, Luke decided he wanted to play with Claire.

He got bored, so Claire had to entertain herself but she just couldn't quite reach the musical frog....

Don't worry....Luke came to save the day!

Four Months

As promised, here is the 4 month update on Claire! Where does time go?!?! Our sweet little baby girl is really starting to show her personality now that she is getting older. She loves to sit up in her bumbo and watch the doggies and her brother play.
Look how long she is! She just had her 4 month appointment, and she is 24.3" long and weighs 11 pounds 12 ounces. The doctor was really happy with how much progress she has made in the past month. She has neck control, rolls over, watches everything around her, and plays nicely with her toys - everything a 4 month old little girl should be doing!
She loves to laugh and make funny noises. Her favorite noise is a sigh, which is pretty genetic if you know her mom, uncle Mike, Grandma Anne, or Great-Aunt Marybeth!
However, she looks like a true Malone with those big blue eyes and rosy cheeks!
Just like Luke, she even lets us make funny faces on her. Apparently, she doesn't think it is quite as funny as Luke used to since she immediately started crying afterwards. Maybe it was just her cue for another snuggle, because if you need to know one thing about Claire, it is that she loves NOTHING in this world more than a good snuggle!!

Big Boy

My baby is all grown up, and I just don't know how I feel about this!!!

He wears his glasses all the time now....

And sits on the potty.....

And washes himself after a day of playing in the dirt....

And checks himself out in the mirror.....

And brushes those teeth real good....

And wipes his face when he's done...

 All done!

Look how cute that naked little boy is!

While he was getting ready for bed, Daddy was busy transforming his crib into a toddler bed.

Poor Luke didn't quite know what to think at first.

But then Daddy read a book with him, and everything was okay.

He didn't even care that it was his first night in a big boy bed. I think I might cry.....

Next blog: Luke's not the only one getting big :(
